Ingredients
Scale
4 ripe pears (Bartlett or Bosc work well)
2 cups water
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup bourbon
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 cinnamon stick
2 whole cloves
1 lemon (for juice)
Fresh mint leaves (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
Peel the pears, leaving the stems intact. Cut a small slice off the bottom of each pear to create a stable base.
Make the Poaching Liquid: In a medium saucepan, combine water, sugar, bourbon, vanilla extract, cinnamon stick, cloves, and lemon juice. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
Bring to a Simmer: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
Add the Pears: Carefully add the peeled pears to the simmering liquid. Ensure they are submerged as much as possible.
Poach the Pears: Allow the pears to poach for about 20-30 minutes, turning them occasionally. They should be tender but not mushy.
Check for Doneness: To check if the pears are done, insert a knife into the thickest part of the pear. It should slide in easily.
Remove from Heat: Once the pears are tender, remove the saucepan from heat. Let the pears cool in the poaching liquid for about 15 minutes.
Serve or Store: You can serve the pears warm or refrigerate them in the poaching liquid for later use.
