Classic Monte Cristo Sandwich: Sweet & Savory Beef

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 slices honey wheat bread
  • 9 slices roasted turkey deli meat
  • 9 slices honey beef deli meat
  • 3 slices mild cheddar cheese
  • 3 slices Swiss cheese
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream (optional)
  • ¾ teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch freshly grated nutmeg (optional)
  • 36 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1.53 tablespoons neutral oil (such as vegetable or canola)
  • ½ cup (62.5 g) confectioners’ sugar
  • Red raspberry preserves, warmed (for dipping)
  • Honey mustard, warmed (optional, for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Lightly toast bread if desired for structure. For each of the three sandwiches, layer: one slice of bread, one slice Swiss cheese, three slices honey beef, three slices roasted turkey, one slice mild cheddar cheese, one slice Swiss cheese, and top with another slice of bread. Gently press each assembled sandwich to compact layers.
  2. In a shallow dish (wide enough for a sandwich), whisk together eggs, whole milk, heavy cream (if using), Dijon mustard, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg (if using) until completely smooth and homogenous. A well-whisked batter ensures uniform flavor and a golden crust.
  3. Heat a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low to medium heat. Add 3-6 tablespoons unsalted butter and 1.5-3 tablespoons neutral oil to coat the bottom. Dip one assembled sandwich into the custard batter, allowing it to soak for about 15-20 seconds per side, then let any excess drip off. Place the sandwich in the hot skillet and cook for approximately 3-5 minutes per side, until it’s beautifully golden-brown and the cheese inside is fully melted and gooey. After flipping, gently press the sandwich with a spatula. Remove to a wire rack and repeat for the remaining sandwiches, adding more fat to the pan as needed to maintain even browning.
  4. For a truly classic, crispier exterior: Fill a heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer with about 3-4 inches of neutral oil and heat to 350-375°F (175-190°C), using a thermometer for accuracy. Dip each sandwich in the custard batter as described above. Carefully lower one dipped sandwich into the hot oil and fry for approximately 2-3 minutes per side, or until a deep, rich golden-brown all over. Remove and place on a wire rack set over paper towels to drain excess oil. Allow oil temperature to recover before frying the next sandwich.
  5. Allow cooked sandwiches to rest for 1-2 minutes on a cutting board or wire rack. Slice each Monte Cristo Sandwich diagonally from corner to corner to create two triangles. Generously dust the top of each half with confectioners’ sugar using a fine-mesh sieve. Gently warm the raspberry preserves and honey mustard (if using) in separate small bowls. Serve your magnificent Monte Cristo Sandwiches immediately with the warmed dipping sauces for an iconic sweet and savory experience.
