Ingredients
Scale
1 ½ pounds ground beef (preferably 80% lean for juiciness)
¼ cup Irish stout beer
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 hamburger buns (try toasted brioche for extra richness)
4 slices cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons olive oil (for sautéing onions)
Optional toppings: Lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, or additional caramelized onions
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon brown sugar
Salt, to taste
Instructions
In a medium pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, and sprinkle with a pinch of salt and the brown sugar. Stir occasionally and cook until the onions become golden and tender, about 15–20 minutes. Set aside once done.
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Irish stout beer, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until everything is combined. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, pressing a small indentation into the center of each patty.
Heat a grill or skillet to medium-high heat and lightly oil the surface. Add the burger patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and cover to melt.
While the burgers are cooking, lightly butter the hamburger buns and toast them on the grill or in a skillet until golden brown.
Place a burger patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with a generous helping of caramelized onions, add any extra toppings you like, and then cover with the top bun.
