Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tube Pillsbury Biscuits (8 count)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350º F (175º C). Spray a 13×9 inch baking dish with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the breakfast sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until it is no longer pink.
  3. Sprinkle the 1/3 cup of all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage. Stir and cook until the flour is absorbed and no white streaks remain.
  4. Slowly pour in 4 cups of milk while stirring constantly. Bring the mixture to a simmer, season with 1 1/2 teaspoons of black pepper, and cook for 5-10 minutes until the gravy thickens and becomes creamy. Taste and add salt as needed.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat together the 6 large eggs, 1/2 cup milk, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard powder, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper until well combined.
  6. Cut each biscuit into 6-8 pieces and spread them evenly over the bottom of the prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the biscuit pieces.
  7. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the biscuits and cheese. Then, scoop the prepared sausage gravy over the top and spread it into an even layer.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until the casserole is golden brown, puffed up, and fully set.
  9. Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
