Jalapeño Popper Egg Rolls are a delightful fusion of creamy cheese, spicy jalapeños, and savory spices wrapped in a crispy egg roll wrapper. This appetizer offers a unique flavor explosion, combining the best of Mexican and Asian cuisines. They are easy to prepare, customizable to your spice preference, and perfect for any occasion, from game days to parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup diced jalapeños (fresh or pickled)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1012 egg roll wrappers
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, diced jalapeños, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until the filling is smooth and uniform.
  2. Wrap the Egg Rolls: Place an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface or cutting board. Spoon about 1-2 tablespoons of the filling into the center of the wrapper.
  3. Seal the Wrapper: Fold the bottom corner of the wrapper over the filling. Then, fold in the sides and roll it tightly away from you. Moisten the top corner with a little water to seal the roll.
  4. Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. You’ll want enough oil to allow the egg rolls to float slightly while frying, about 1-2 inches deep.
  5. Fry the Egg Rolls: Once the oil is hot (approximately 350°F), carefully place a few egg rolls in the pan, being careful not to overcrowd. Fry for about 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain Excess Oil: Using a slotted spoon, remove the egg rolls from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
  7. Repeat: Continue the process until all egg rolls are cooked.
  8. Optional Baking Method: For a healthier option, you can also bake the egg rolls. Preheat your oven to 400°F, brush each wrapped egg roll with a light layer of oil, and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, use fresh jalapeños with seeds. For a milder flavor, remove the seeds and membranes.
  • Experiment with different cheeses like pepper jack or Monterey Jack for varied flavor profiles.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature to achieve crispy egg rolls without them becoming greasy.
  • These egg rolls can be made ahead and frozen for later enjoyment. Fry or bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
